Billy Chapman

Billy Chapman was the primary antagonist of Silent Night, Deadly Night. Billy went to see his institutionalized Grandfather, who tells him that Santa Claus really punishes the bad children. A shaken Billy later witnesses his parents killed by an armed maniac in a Santa Claus suit on Christmas Eve, 1971. His father, Jim, pulls over the car when the man flags them down, as he thinks that the man is in need of assistance. When the man pulls a gun on him, Jim is shot through the car windshield while trying to drive away, and his mother's throat is cut when she resists the man trying to rape her. Billy cleverly fled the scene with his one year old brother, Ricky, and hid in the nearby bushes while the man flees. Billy, thinking it was his fault that his parents were killed, as he hadn't been "good", Billy grew up in a Catholic orphanage, run by the tyrannical and sadistic Mother Superior who severely punishes "naughty" children. Every year at Christmas, Billy grows more and more distant, beginning with him drawing a brutal scene with Santa and his reindeer. Billy's childhood trauma grows untreated, eventually leading to the outcome of the trauma. Billy becomes a store Santa where he begins to tell children who sit on his lap that they will be punished severely if they are not good. That Christmas Eve, 1984, Billy witnesses a rape attempt on a fellow co-worker whom he has a crush on. Billy "punishes" him by strangling him with Christmas lights. Billy then kills his co-worker with a box cutter when she screams in hysterics at him. Billy kills another worker with an ice-pick to the skull when he witnesses the scene. Ira, the manager, attempts to flee by attacking Billy and using his axe to break open the glass of the locked door. Billy shoots her with a crossbow and flees the scene. During the panic caused by Billy being on the loose, by now, the police from all over the state are chasing after suspicious figures near the orphanage (as that is where they think he will go next) in Santa suits. Father O'Brien (who was to play Santa at the orphanage) is shot to death right in front of Ricky by a police officer, who thought O'Brien was Billy. Billy kills two teenagers whom he deems "naughty" and heads for the orphanage. Billy attacks Mother Superior with the axe, but is shot multiple times before he can do so. As the children watch in horror, Billy tells them that "Santa Claus" is gone, and that they all are safe. Ricky looks up with a cold stare at Mother Superior and grimly says "naughty", implying that he will also go insane as a result of the trauma he experienced.

Ricky Caldwell

Richard "Ricky" Caldwell (formerly Chapman) is the main antagonist of Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 and Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!. He was portrayed mainly by Eric Freeman, and Bill Moseley. Ricky was born in 1970 in the state of Utah, the son of Jim and Ellie Chapman and the younger brother of Billy. The maniac in the Santa Claus suit attacks the family and leaves Billy and Ricky to die. They are found and rescued and brought to St. Mary's Orphanage. Too young to fully remember the deaths of his parents Ricky grows up normal and happy, while the traumatized Billy is continually beaten by the tyrannical and sadistic Mother Superior, who views him as a problem child. By 1984 a drunken Billy snaps and goes on a killing spree dressed as Santa, murdering people he deems naughty with a variety of weaponry. During the panic caused by Billy being on the loose, Father O'Brien (who was to play Santa at the orphanage) is shot to death right in front of Ricky by a police officer, who thought O'Brien was Billy. After the killing of Father O'Brien the children are all kept inside by Mother Superior, who tries to keep them occupied while the police hunt for Billy. When Billy manages to get inside the orphanage and prepares to strike down Mother Superior with an axe he is shot. Ricky grows distant, like Billy, as a result of seeing Father O'Brien and Billy both shot right in front of him. Also, without Billy to help him through Mother Superior's violent punishments, Ricky slowly goes insane. After Billy's death, St. Mary's closes down and Ricky is adopted by the Rosenbergs, who are told of Ricky's troublesome past and are advised to avoid celebrating Christmas. Having a fairly average upbringing Ricky, after Morty (Ricky's stepfather) dies, grows introverted and distant, spending his time wandering the woods for hours. As his trauma was never actually treated, over time, Ricky starts to become unhinged and like his brother, begins killing those he views as naughty, starting with a would-be rapist in the woods and a loan shark in an alley behind his workplace. Ricky's psychosis is placated when he meets a girl named Jennifer Statson by chance and the two of them begin dating, with Ricky viewing Jennifer as the only thing he truly loves. One day while on a stroll through a suburban neighborhood, they are harassed by Jennifer's ex-boyfriend, Chip, who insults and demeans her. Ricky electrocutes Chip in a rage with jumper cables, and strangles Jennifer with a car antenna when she flies into hysterics. Ricky proceeds to go on a rampage after stealing a police officer's gun, (leading to the infamous Garbage Day! meme. Ricky attempts to shoot himself when cornered by law enforcement, but he is out of bullets. Ricky tells this to the thirteenth psychiatrist who has tried to help him, Dr. Henry Bloom, and proceeds to strangle him with the tape of the audio recording machine. Ricky escapes, steals a salvation army suit, and heads to the home of the retired Mother Superior, who by now, has retired and suffered a stroke. Ricky chases her through the house with an axe, and succeeds in killing her, however, he is shot multiple times and thrown through a glass door. Ricky opens his eyes and smiles, implying that he is still alive.

In Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!, Ricky is left in a coma, and Ricky's damaged head is repaired by the eccentric Dr. Newbury, who wants to analyze Ricky's behavior. He replaces Ricky's skullcap with a transparent one made of plastic and metal. On Christmas Eve, Dr. Newbury recruits a young clairvoyant named Laura Anderson, to communicate with Ricky and awaken him from his coma. When he is awakened, he discovers a drunken man in a Santa Claus suit staggering into his room. The man begins harassing him, and Ricky flies into a rage, killing the man, taking his suit, taking a letter-opener, and killing his way out of the mental hospital he is in. He follows Laura and her friends to her Grandmother's for a Christmas celebration, and Ricky kills the old woman. They barricade themselves inside to keep Ricky out, and Ricky breaks in and attacks the group until there are only Ricky and Laura left. Laura impales Ricky, and Ricky is loaded into an ambulance. Laura wishes a policeman a Merry Christmas, and she sees a vision of Ricky saying "And a Happy New Year."
